Gilbert Stuart Birthplace and Museum, 1 mi. e. of US 1 at 815 Gilbert Stuart Rd., dates from 1750. Born in 1755, Stuart was one of America's foremost portrait painters. He was especially noted for his series of paintings of George Washington. Period furnishings, two water wheels, a grist mill, a snuff mill, an herb garden and nature trails are featured. The welcome center and gallery contain original works by Stuart and changing exhibits.
