AAA Editor Notes
Church of Our Lady of El Carmen (Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Carmen) is in the historic center on Plaza del Carmen, a blk. w. of Alameda Park. This ornate church is the city's finest example of Churrigueresque architecture. Its domes are decorated with blue, green, yellow and white tiles. Also note the profusion of carved stone angels, a hallmark of indigenous craftsmanship. The interior contains a carved pulpit, a reredos by Eduardo Tresguerras, paintings by Vallejo and a baroque altar considered one of the most impressive in Mexico.
