Last Mountain Lake National Wildlife Area is at the n. end of Last Mountain Lake; from Hwy. 2, access is via Hwy. 20 e. about 15 km (9 mi.) to the signed jct. with a gravel road, then s. on the gravel road about 3 km (2 mi.) to the national wildlife area headquarters office. One of the first bird sanctuaries in North America, this wildlife refuge was established in 1887 and covers 1,025 hectares (2,533 acres). Favorable habitats and location make it a haven and breeding ground for more than 280 species of birds, including endangered species.

Each year during May and again between mid-August and mid-September, up to 50,000 sandhill cranes, 450,000 geese and huge numbers of ducks stop at the sanctuary during their seasonal migrations. Visitors can take advantage of two nature trails, an observation tower and a self-guiding driving tour.

Pet friendly (call for restrictions/fees.). Recreational activities are permitted. Camping is permitted. Picnicking is permitted. Time: Allow 1 hour minimum.
