Sonora Ecological Center (Centro Ecológico de Sonora) is about 3 km (2 mi.) s. of downtown off Mex. 15. This zoological park exhibits flora and fauna native to northwestern Mexico's varied ecosystems, from arid desert to the rich marine environment of the Gulf of California. Snakes, tortoises, sea lions and the Mexican gray wolf can all be seen. Notable are the more than 300 species of cacti, many of them labeled. The zoo covers a large area and thus is more pleasant to walk during the cooler winter months. Bottled water is available.
