The John Mark Verdier House Museum, 801 Bay St. across from Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park, is a fine Federal-style residence built around 1804 and furnished with period pieces. Forty-minute guided tours point out highlights from when the home belonged to the prominent Verdier family, when the Marquis de Lafayette visited the house and spoke to Beaufort residents in 1825, and when the house served as headquarters for the Union Army during the Civil War. Guided tours are available.
$10; free (ages 0-18 and active military with ID).
Hours: Mon.-Sat. 10-4. Guided tours depart every 30 minutes. Closed major holidays.
