The Powder Magazine, 79 Cumberland St., was constructed in 1713 during Charleston's proprietary period to store gunpowder for the defense of the settlement. Reputed to be the oldest public building in the Carolinas, the arsenal is a museum featuring artifacts and exhibits focusing on Colonial and Revolutionary War history.
