Clemson University, 11 mi. w. of I-85 exit 19B on US 76 at 109 Daniel Dr., was established in 1889 as a scientific college on the former plantation of John C. Calhoun, a prominent statesman and U.S. vice president, senator and secretary of state. Maps and information for tours of the 1,400-acre campus can be obtained at the visitor center on Daniel Drive next to the Alumni Center. Guided tours are available.

Hours: Visitor center Mon.-Fri. 8-4:30, Sat. 9-4:30 (also Sun. 1-4:30, Sept.-Apr.). Guided 1.5-hour walking tours are given Mon.-Sat. at various times; phone ahead to confirm schedule.
