Darlington Raceway is at 1301 Harry Byrd Hwy. The track dubbed “Too Tough to Tame” opened in 1950 with the Southern 500, which has since become its signature annual event. The culmination of local businessman Harold Brasington's dreams and labor, Darlington Raceway is a 1.366-mile egg-shaped oval; the lopsided west end was so configured to avoid destroying a neighboring landowner's fish pond.
Darlington's facilities include two towers, state-of-the-art grandstands and a pit road wide enough for the full lineup. Unless there is a special event, visitors can go to Gate 39A to have a look. The raceway gets a lot of attention Labor Day weekend when it hosts a NASCAR XFINITY Series event as well as a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series event.
