AAA Editor Notes
Mepkin Abbey is at 1098 Mepkin Abbey Rd., following signs. This was once Mepkin Plantation, home to Revolutionary patriot and politician Henry Laurens, whose contributions include serving as president of the Continental Congress 1777-78. The serene terraced gardens and oak-strewn grounds overlooking the Cooper River are now home to Trappist monks. Visitors may walk the grounds on their own or take a tour given by one of the monks or a docent. Guided tours of the church and grounds include an explanation of monastic life and the history of the abbey.
Note: Ring the bell at the reception center upon your arrival.
