Newberry Opera House is downtown at 1201 McKibben St. This structure, inspired by French Gothic architecture, was built in 1881 as a multipurpose facility. The upper floor was designated for performance space while the ground floor housed a fire station, police station, courthouse and other city offices. The building has since been restored and even enlarged. More than 250 dance, musical and theater performances are given throughout the year. Guided tours are offered, but access to the stage and backstage areas may not be available depending on the performance schedule.
