AAA Editor Notes
Black Elk Peak is about 8 mi. n.e. of jct. SRs 89 and 87. The 7,242-foot summit, in the center of the Black Elk Wilderness and Norbeck Wildlife Preserve, is the highest point in South Dakota and affords a panorama of hundreds of miles of southwest South Dakota, southwestern Wyoming and northeastern Nebraska. Formerly known as Harney Peak, the mountaintop can be reached only by hiking trails ranging from 3 to 8 miles long each way from the north, south and east.

Note: Hikers must register at the box on the trail. The forest has experienced pine beetle infestation, which leads to tree mortality. Trees may fall at any time and trails may be blocked.

Time: Allow 4 hours minimum.
