McCrory Gardens and South Dakota Arboretum is w. of I-29 to 631 22nd Ave. via US 14. Part of South Dakota State University's teaching, research and outreach facility, the gardens are recognized as one the country's 13 All-American Display Gardens. Highlights include a rock garden, a cottage garden, a sensory garden, a straw bale building with a living roof as well as many specialty gardens with thousands of flowering annuals, perennials, trees and shrubs on more than 25 acres.
A 45-acre arboretum features trees native or adapted to the region. The gardens reach their peak in July and August, but are lovely spring through fall. The education and visitor center links the formal display gardens and the arboretum, and provides workshops, continuing education classes and events.
Pets on leash are allowed in arboretum only.
