Big Thunder Gold Mine is on SR 40, 3 blks. e. of the Keystone traffic signal. Visitors can take an underground, 45-minute guided tour of the 1890s gold mine. A mill features mining, milling and assay equipment from gold rush days. Gold and gem panning beside Battle Creek is offered, with guaranteed gold.

Full- and half-day trips feature off-site panning at a Black Hills National Forest claim; participants learn to classify and sluice in a creek.

Guided tours are available. Food is available.

Mine tour $9.95; $6.95 (ages 5-12). Gold panning $7.95 (with tour); $9.95 (without tour). Gem panning $6.95 per bag of gemstone rough. Off-site panning, full day $70; $55 (ages 6-15). Half day $40; $30 (ages 6-15). Phone ahead to confirm rates.
Tours depart every half-hour daily 8-8, June-Aug.; 9-6, Mar.-May and Sept.-Oct.; by appointment, rest of year. Last tour begins 1 hour before closing. Allow 1 hour minimum.
