Petrified Forest of the Black Hills is off I-90 exit 46, then 1 mi. e. to 8228 Elk Creek Rd. This area is one of the Black Hills' largest natural exposures of petrified wood, dating from 120 million years ago. The self-guiding tour includes an animated video describing the historical geology of the Black Hills and tree petrifaction, digital audio and graphic museum displays and a walk along a five-block trail that passes logs ranging from 5 to 100 feet long and up to 3 feet thick.

Camping is permitted. Time: Allow 1 hour minimum.
