Great Plains Zoo is 1 mi. e. on 12th St. from I-29 exit 79, then .2 mi. s. on Kiwanis Ave. to Sherman Park. Home to more than 1,000 animals from 160 species, including rhinos, giraffes and tigers, the zoo's many displays re-create the animals' natural habitats. The Snow Monkey exhibit showcases Japanese macaques known for their distinctive bright red faces. Other areas include Rare Rhinos of Africa, the Asian Cat exhibit, the African Savannah and the Hy-Vee Face-to-Face Farm. A train ride through the Africa section and a carousel operate seasonally.
