Appalachian Caverns is 1.4 mi. s.e. on US 394, .1 mi. s. on Feathers Chapel Rd., 1.3 mi. e. on Buncombe Rd., then .5 mi. e. to 420 Cave Hill Rd. The 1-hour regular tour takes visitors along several levels of lighted walkways that traverse caverns filled with fragile mineral formations. Manganese, iron, copper and calcium deposits create vivid colors within the various rooms, with some chamber ceilings reaching 135 feet. More in-depth Explorer and Wild tours can be scheduled in advance. Gem mining and a climbing wall are available for an additional charge.
