Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge is 7 mi. s. on FM 907, then .25 mi. e. on US 281. This 2,088-acre refuge harbors birds found only in southern Texas, including the great kiskadee, hook-billed kite and green jay. Twelve miles of walking trails weave through the refuge, and an interpretive 90-minute tram ride is offered. Guided tours are available.
$5 (per private vehicle); free (to all first Sun. of the month). Tram fare $4; $3.50 (ages 62+); $2 (ages 0-12).
Hours: Trails dawn-dusk. Visitor center daily 8-4. Tram departs daily at 9:30, noon and 2, Nov.-Apr. Closed Jan. 1, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas and Dec. 31.
