Old Hidalgo Pumphouse is at 902 S. 2nd St. A 45-minute guided tour takes visitors through the restored 1909 pump house. The original steam pumps and other machinery used to irrigate 40,000 acres of the Rio Grande Valley around Hidalgo are preserved here. Also on the grounds is a wing of the World Birding Center, where visitors can explore nature trails that are inhabited by birds and butterflies.
