Sophienburg Museum and Archives is at 401 W. Coll St. Prince Carl of Solms-Braunfels built a log fortress on this hilltop site. Displays include many of the nobleman's personal effects, Native American artifacts and household items of the pioneer era. Among the museum's highlights are the re-created bakery, pharmacy and barber shop. Archive documents highlight European immigration and settlement in Texas and the American southwest. Time: Allow 30 minutes minimum.
Archives $10; $1 (ages 0-18); free (active military with ID). Museum $8; $4 (ages 13-18); $2 (ages 6-12); free (ages 0-5 and active military with ID).
Hours: Tues.-Sat. 10-4. Closed major holidays.
