Fort Leaton State Historic Site is 3 mi. e. on FM 170. Former bounty hunter Benjamin Leaton established the border trading post in 1848. Twenty-five of the 47 rooms around the patio of the adobe fortress have been restored. Exhibits depict the area's Native American, Spanish, Mexican and American pioneer cultures. Picnicking is permitted. Time: Allow 30 minutes minimum.
Admission Oct.-May $5; free (ages 0-12). Admission rest of year $3; free (ages 0-12).
Hours: Daily 8-4:30. Closed Christmas.
