Texas State Railroad is 2.7 mi. w. on US 84 at Park Rd. 76. The Texas state prison system began construction on the railroad in 1881. The line was built to transport iron ore to smelting furnaces at the East Texas State Penitentiary in Rusk. Today, passengers may travel through the “Pineywoods” region on 4.5-hour, 50-mile round-trip rides to Palestine aboard early 20th-century trains. Along with regularly scheduled trips, several special-event train rides take place during the year. On-board meals must be pre-ordered when making reservations. Camping is permitted. Picnicking is permitted. Food is available.
$32-$65; $20-$40 (ages 0-12). Meals $8-$12. Reservations are recommended.
Hours: Trips depart Sat. at 11, early Mar.-late Sept. (also Mon.-Fri. at 11 in Mar.) and in early Nov. Hours may vary; phone ahead to confirm schedule. Phone ahead for special-event trips schedule.
