Petroleum Museum is at 1500 I-20W exit 136, .7 mi. w. of jct. SR 349 and I-20. Situated in the heart of the Permian Basin, this museum chronicles the origin and discovery of fossil fuels. Pioneers of the oil and gas industry are honored in the Petroleum Hall of Fame.

In the Chaparral Gallery you'll learn about the history and innovations of the Midland-based auto racing team Chaparral Cars. You can view seven legendary Chaparral race cars, explore exhibits relating to aerodynamics and sit behind the wheel of a replica Chaparral 2E.

Other highlights include the Mineral Gallery and Permian Reef diorama. A permanent collection of Tom Lovell paintings is on display, and a research library is open to visitors. Drilling rigs and antique tools also are on display in the outdoor Oil Patch.

Guided tours are available. Picnicking is permitted. Time: Allow 1 hour, 30 minutes minimum.
