Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is s. of Memorial Amphitheater, just w. of jct. Memorial and Wilson drs. in Arlington National Cemetery. Striking in its simplicity, the die piece of Colorado marble on which the sculpture is carved is one of the largest blocks ever quarried. Before carving, it weighed 50 tons. Lying beneath the tomb sarcophagus is the body of an unknown American soldier brought back from France after World War I. In 1958 the remains of unknown American military personnel from World War II and the Korean War were interred in marked crypts at the head of the tomb.

Specially selected members of the Army's 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard) guard the tomb 24 hours a day.
