Capitol Square lies between 9th and Governor sts. and Broad and Bank sts. surrounding the Virginia State Capitol. Notable attractions within the heart of the square include the Virginia Women's Monument, which features bronze statues and Wall of Honor lauding important Virginia women, and the Washington Monument, a 60-foot-high equestrian statue surrounded by patriots of the American Revolution. To the east is the Executive Mansion, the official residence of Virginia’s governors since 1813. Just outside the gates of the mansion is the Virginia Civil Rights Memorial, which recalls a 1951 protest led by African American students in Prince Edward County. To the north is the 1894 Old City Hall. The City Hall across the street offers a 19th-floor observation deck. Visitors may take a self-guiding tour of the grounds.
