Folger Shakespeare Library is at 201 E. Capitol St. S.E. at 2nd St. S.E., just e. of the Library of Congress. This rectangular building has a Tudor-inspired interior. The library houses 82 of William Shakespeare's First Folios; printed in 1623, they comprise the first collection of Shakespeare's plays. One of these editions is displayed along with a touch screen that allows visitors to peruse digitally. Included is what might be the Bard's most beloved work, “Romeo and Juliet,” with page-by-page software providing magnified views and expert commentary.

Outside, the Elizabethan Garden features a knot garden, herbs mentioned in Shakespeare’s plays and statues by American sculptor Greg Wyatt. Lectures, plays, concerts, and poetry and fiction readings are presented regularly in the Folger's Elizabethan-inspired theater. Changing exhibits featuring Shakespearean and Renaissance-related items—including paintings and rare books and manuscripts—are displayed in the Great Hall.

Guided tours are available.
