Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden is on the National Mall at 700 Independence Ave. S.W. and 7th St. S.W. The Smithsonian's museum of modern and contemporary art is housed in an elevated, drum-shaped building designed by architect Gordon Bunshaft. It features three floors of gallery space and a nearly 4-acre outdoor bi-level sculpture garden and plaza that together house selections from the museum's collection of nearly 12,000 works. Recent video works can be seen in the Black Box, a space dedicated to new media. Special exhibitions are offered throughout the year.

Notable artists represented include Alexander Calder, Roy Lichtenstein, Willem de Kooning, Dan Graham, Judith Shea, David Smith, Juan Muñoz, Mark di Suvero, Alberto Giacometti, Tony Cragg, Ellsworth Kelly, Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth. Works by emerging contemporary artists are displayed as well. A highlight among the more than 60 large-scale works in the sculpture garden is a cast of Auguste Rodin's “The Burghers of Calais.”

Guided tours are available. Time: Allow 1 hour minimum.
