La Antigua

La Antigua is about 32 km (20 mi.) n. of the city via Mex. 180. This small village, shaded by big trees, was the original site of Veracruz. It contains a ruined 16th-century customs house (Casa de Cortés) as well as the Hermitage (La Ermita del Rosario), reputed to be the oldest church on the American mainland. This is a popular day trip, and there are a couple of small seafood eateries in the vicinity.
