Mount Equinox, on SR 7A, 5 mi. s. of jct. SRs 11 and 30, is owned by a Carthusian monastery. At 3,848 feet, the mountain is the highest peak in the Taconic Range. The view from the summit encompasses parts of New York, New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Québec. The summit is reached by a 5.2-mile paved road with guardrails, steep grades and sharp curves. The Saint Bruno Scenic Viewing Center features exhibits detailing the history of the monastery and the mountain; a two-level deck affords grand views. A hiking trail is available. Note: Vehicles larger than a 15-passenger van or a small camper are not permitted. Motor homes are prohibited. Picnicking is permitted.
$15 (per private vehicle driver); $12 (per motorcycle driver); $5 (per passenger in private vehicle); free (ages 0-10 and motorcycle passenger).
Hours: Daily 9-5, Memorial Day-Oct. 31 (weather permitting). Last vehicle allowed up the mountain at 4. Phone ahead to confirm schedule.
