Rock of Ages Visitors Center is at 558 Graniteville Rd., following signs from I-89 exit 6. Guided tours of the 1880 quarry show the drilling, blasting and removal of granite from the 550-foot-deep, 50-acre hole carved out of the hillside over the last century. The company's manufacturing division operates one of the largest granite plants in the world; the plant can be seen on a self-guiding tour. The observation deck overlooks cutting, polishing and rubber-cutting operations. Visitors can engage in a hands-on sandblast activity mid-June to mid-October. Free bowling is available on the outdoor granite lane. Guided tours are available. Time: Allow 2 hours minimum.
Free. Shuttle $6; $5.50 (ages 62+); $2.75 (ages 6-13).
Hours: Visitor center daily 9-5, Sept.-Oct.; Mon.-Sat. 9-5, mid-May through Aug. 31. Self-guiding plant tours Mon.-Fri. 8-3:30. A 40-minute shuttle tour of the active quarry departs Mon.-Sat. (also Sun., Sept. 1 to mid-Oct.) about every 45 minutes 9:15-3:35, Memorial Day weekend to mid-Oct. (weather permitting). Closed July 4.
