Vermont State House, 115 State St., is built of Barre granite in an impressive Renaissance Revival style. The gilded dome is surmounted by a statue of Agriculture. Inside the portico stands a marble statue of Ethan Allen and a brass cannon captured from Hessians in the 1777 Battle of Bennington. Guided tours are available.
Hours: Mon.-Fri. 8-4 (also Sat. 11-2:30, mid-July to mid-Oct.). Thirty-minute tours are given Mon.-Fri. 10-3:30, Sat. 11-2:30, mid-July to mid-Oct.; by appointment rest of year.
