Vermont State House, 115 State St., is built of Barre granite in an impressive Renaissance Revival style. The gilded dome is surmounted by a statue of Agriculture. Inside the portico stands a marble statue of Ethan Allen and a brass cannon captured from Hessians in the 1777 Battle of Bennington.

Hours: Mon.-Fri. 7:45-4:15 (also Sat. 11-3, early July to mid-Oct.). Thirty-minute tours are given Mon.-Fri. 10-3:30, Sat. 11-2:30, early July to mid-Oct.; Mon.-Fri. 9-3, rest of year. Closed state holidays.
