Woodlawn

Woodlawn is 7.5 mi. s. at 9000 Richmond Hwy. (US 1). The land, originally part of Mount Vernon, was a gift from George Washington to his nephew, Maj. Lawrence Lewis, and Lewis' wife, Eleanor “Nelly” Custis, a granddaughter of Martha Washington. Dr. William Thornton, who designed the 1805 mansion, was the first architect of the Capitol. The 19th-century period rooms are open for viewing.

Guided tours are available. Picnicking is permitted. Time: Allow 1 hour minimum.
