AAA Editor Notes
Breaks Interstate Park, accessible via SR 80, straddles the border between Kentucky and Virginia on the eastern edge of the Cumberland Mountain Plateau. The park highlights a “break,” a 1,650-foot-deep gorge known as the Grand Canyon of the South, cut through Pine Mountain by the Russell Fork of the Big Sandy River.
Overlooks provide excellent views of the gorge, rock formations, caves, springs and vibrant rhododendron. Natural science and historical displays are housed at the visitor center, which provides self-guiding maps of 25 miles of nature and hiking trails. Other recreational opportunities include fishing, boating, pedal boating, trail biking, bird-watching and geocaching. A water park with four waterslides and other fun features also is open on-site from late May through Labor Day.
Pet friendly (call for restrictions/fees.). Recreational activities are permitted. Camping is permitted. Picnicking is permitted. Food is available.
