AAA Editor Notes

Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel carries US 13 across the mouth of Chesapeake Bay from Virginia Beach to Virginia's Eastern Shore. This travel convenience and tourist attraction offers a spectacular panoramic view of the bay. The 17.6-mile bridge-tunnel is unusual in its combination of different types of major structures in one crossing, including bridges, tunnels and four man-made islands. After its completion in 1964, the bridge-tunnel was named “one of the seven engineering wonders of the modern world.” The southernmost island features visitor facilities, a restaurant and a fishing pier. Note: The southernmost island will be closed beginning in 2017 for construction.
May 15-Sept. 15 one-way toll (per private passenger vehicle) $15 (Fri.-Sun.), $13 (Mon.-Thurs.). Rest of year one-way toll (per private passenger vehicle) $13.
