Thomas Jefferson’s Poplar Forest is at 1542 Bateman Bridge Rd. The brick octagonal villa, one of only two homes that Jefferson designed for himself, was his retreat when he visited his working plantations in Bedford County. The Palladian-style house is undergoing restoration. Displays and guided 50-minute tours explain the restoration process as well as plantation life. Guided tours are available.
$15; $13 (ages 65+ and active military with ID); $7 (ages 12-18 and college students with ID); $3 (ages 6-11); free (active military with ID and their families Memorial Day-Labor Day).
Hours: Guided tours daily 10-4, mid-Mar. through Dec. 30; Sat.-Sun. 10-4, mid-Jan. to mid-Mar. Closed Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and Christmas.
