The Exchange Hotel Civil War Medical Museum

The Exchange Hotel Civil War Medical Museum is at 400 S. Main St. This stately Georgian structure was built as a railroad hotel in the late 1800s but served a battlefield receiving hospital during the Civil War. It is said to be the only receiving hospital still standing in Virginia. Three floors display a collection of medical artifacts, including surgical instruments, pharmaceutical bottles and prosthetic devices. Other exhibits document the building's use as a Freedman's Bureau during the Reconstruction Era.
