AAA Editor Notes
Virginia Military Institute is off Main St. on Letcher Ave. Founded in 1839, this was the nation’s first state-supported military college. On the National Register of Historic Districts, VMI is noted for its military and academic programs; the Barracks is a National Historic Landmark. Alumni include Gen. George C. Marshall, Adm. Richard E. Byrd and Lt. Gen. Lewis B. “Chesty” Puller.

Daily 9-5. Departing from the VMI Museum, cadet-guided post tours are given daily at noon (based on cadet availability). Closed Jan. 1, Thanksgiving and Dec. 23-31. Phone ahead to confirm schedule. Allow 1 hour minimum.
