Virginia Military Institute is off Main St. on Letcher Ave. Founded in 1839, this was the nation’s first state-supported military college. On the National Register of Historic Districts, VMI is noted for its military and academic programs; the Barracks is a National Historic Landmark. Alumni include Gen. George C. Marshall, Adm. Richard E. Byrd and Lt. Gen. Lewis B. “Chesty” Puller.
Guided tours are available. Time: Allow 1 hour minimum.
Hours: Daily 9-5. Cadet-guided post tours (departing from the VMI Museum) are given daily at noon. Closed Jan. 1-3, week of Thanksgiving and Dec. 23-31. Tours depend on the availability of a cadet guide. Phone ahead to confirm schedule.
