Virginia Military Institute

Virginia Military Institute is off Main St. on Letcher Ave. Founded in 1839, this was the nation’s first state-supported military college. On the National Register of Historic Districts, VMI is noted for its military and academic programs; the Barracks is a National Historic Landmark. Alumni include Gen. George C. Marshall, Adm. Richard E. Byrd and Lt. Gen. Lewis B. “Chesty” Puller.
