Maggie L. Walker National Historic Site is at 600 N. 2nd St. The daughter of a former slave, Maggie Lena Walker rose to prominence in Richmond as a businesswoman and community leader in the early 1900s. Among her many accomplishments was the founding of the St. Luke Penny Savings Bank, the first chartered bank in the country started by an African-American woman. Her home in the Jackson Ward district has been restored to its 1930s appearance. A visitor center offers an audiovisual presentation and exhibits. Guided tours are available. Time: Allow 30 minutes minimum.
