St. John’s Church is at 2401 E. Broad St. At this church erected in 1741, Patrick Henry delivered to an audience of Colonial leaders at the Second Virginia Convention his “Liberty or Death” speech in favor of independence. The surrounding burial ground contains the graves of George Wythe, a Virginian signer of the Declaration of Independence, and Elizabeth Arnold Poe, mother of Edgar Allan Poe. Guided tours are available.
Tours $8; $7 (ages 62+); $6 (ages 7-18). The Second Virginia Convention re-enactment free; reserved seating available in advance for a fee.
Hours: Guided tours Mon.-Sat. 10-4, Sun. 1-4. Last tour begins 30 minutes before closing. Closed Jan. 1, Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas and Dec. 31. The Second Virginia Convention is re-enacted Sun. at 1:45 (doors open at 1:15), Memorial Day weekend-Labor Day.
