Virginia Museum of Transportation is at 303 Norfolk Ave. S.W. A historic freight station houses steam, electric and diesel locomotives, railcars and cabooses; a large two-tier, O-gauge model train layout; a model circus; antique carriages, automobiles and trucks; and aviation equipment. The museum collection includes more than 50 pieces of rolling stock, including the Norfolk & Western Class A #1218, one of the world’s most technologically advanced steam locomotives. A 48-seat theater in a railcar offers films about rail history.
Also at the museum is the N & O Class J611 steam passenger locomotive known as the “Spirit of Roanoke.” One of only 14 of its kind ever built, it is the only one still in existence. It takes passengers out on special excursions several times a year. Reservations are required and an additional fee is charged; phone ahead for more information.
