False Cape State Park, 4001 Sandpiper Rd., is a 1-mile-wide barrier spit situated between the Back Bay and Atlantic Ocean. The undeveloped, 3,844-acre coastal site can be reached by foot, bicycle and boat. Vehicular transportation options into the park include the Blue Goose Express tram, which departs from Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge, and the Terra Gator beach transporter, which departs from Little Island Park weekends November through March. False Cape offers nearly 6 miles of beachfront; an environmental education center; and opportunities for such recreational activities as hiking, biking, primitive camping and kayaking. Guided tours are available. Pets on leash are allowed. Recreational activities are permitted. Camping is permitted. Picnicking is permitted. Food is available.
Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge Apr.-Oct. $5 (per private vehicle); $2 (per person arriving by other means). Refuge rest of year free. Little Island Park Memorial Day weekend-Labor Day $5 (per private vehicle). Little Island Park rest of year free. Blue Goose Express tram $8; $6 (ages 3-11 and 62+). Tram seating is first-come, first-served. Terra Gator $8. Reservations are required.
Hours: Grounds daily dawn-dusk. Blue Goose Express tram departs daily at 9, Memorial Day-Labor Day; Fri.-Sun. at 9, Apr. 1-day before Memorial Day and day after Labor Day-Sept. 31; schedule varies rest of year. Terra Gator departs Sat.-Sun. at 9, Nov.-Mar. Closed major holidays.
