Old Cape Henry Lighthouse is at 583 Atlantic Ave. within Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story. One of the first public works facilities authorized by Congress, the structure was completed in 1792 and operated until 1881. The top of the lighthouse affords views of the military base, Chesapeake Bay and the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel. Note: To enter the military base, drivers must present vehicle registration and proof of current vehicle insurance. A photo ID also is required for all visitors over age 16. The climb to the top of the lighthouse involves more than 190 steps. Visitors under 42 inches tall are not permitted in the dune area. Time: Allow 1 hour minimum.

Hours: Daily 10-4 (also daily 4-5, mid-Mar. through Oct. 31). Closed Jan. 1-2, Shamrock Marathon (in mid-Mar.), July 4, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas and Dec. 30-31.
