Shelburne Museum, 6000 Shelburne Rd. (US 7), consists of several galleries and 25 historic structures. Spread over 45 acres, the buildings house diverse collections of fine and folk art and artifacts depicting early New England life. Among the structures are a horseshoe barn, jail, country store, schoolhouse, blacksmith shop, meetinghouse, stagecoach inn, lighthouse, hunting lodge, apothecary and furnished houses representing 4 centuries.
Attractions include a railroad depot, a private rail car and locomotive, a two-lane covered bridge, a round barn, a handcrafted model circus parade more than 500 feet long and the side-wheel steamboat Ticonderoga.
Displays of Americana feature a sizable group of wooden cigar-store figures; fine, folk and decorative art; tools; and coaches, carriages and wagons. The Electra Havemeyer Webb Memorial building houses European furnishings, sculpture and paintings by Jean Baptiste Corot, Gustave Courbet, Edgar Degas, Edouard Manet and Claude Monet, as well as works by American artist Mary Cassatt.
The Webb Gallery of American Art contains works by Albert Bierstadt, John Copley, Winslow Homer, Fitz Henry Lane, Grandma Moses, William Prior, Andrew Wyeth and other 18th-, 19th- and 20th-century artists. Formal gardens, ornamental trees and shrubs, and seasonal roses and lilacs adorn the grounds.
Open year-round, the Pizzagalli Center for Art and Education contains two floors of gallery space, as well as classrooms and an auditorium.
Picnicking is permitted. Food is available. Time: Allow 4 hours minimum.
