AAA Editor Notes
Fish Ladder, at the s. end of the dam at the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks, 3015 N.W. 54th St., is one of few facilities of its kind in the United States located at the confluence of salt and fresh water. This ingenious stairway consists of 21 weirs—each approximately a foot higher than the previous one—that enable migrating salmon to bypass the dam and locks. A viewing gallery features windows looking into the upper weirs, both above and below water level.

Information panels and a wall mural illustrate the natural history of the four salmon species that utilize the ladder. Peak migration varies by species: sockeye (July), chinook (late August) and coho (late September). You may see tribal members fishing near the locks, which is permitted by treaties.

Guided tours are available. Time: Allow 30 minutes minimum.
