Chief Joseph Dam is just n. off SR 17. Second only to Grand Coulee Dam in the production of hydropower, Chief Joseph Dam is more than a mile long and 236 feet high. Named for the Nez Perce chief, the dam spans the Columbia River and features several viewpoints and picnic areas. The visitor center, at the base of the dam, offers exhibits and a 10-minute video about the dam's construction.
