Carson National Fish Hatchery is 14 mi. n. at 14041 Wind River Hwy. Built by the Civilian Conservation Corps, the hatchery began operation in 1937. The hatchery's ponds and incubation buildings are spring-fed and maintain a constant temperature of 42 F. Chinook salmon can be viewed year-round, but the best time to see the large, adult fish is May through August. Spawning takes place in August, and the young fry are marked with coded wire tags in May.
