Stonerose Interpretive Center is at 15 N. Kean St. The center provides a look at life on Earth 50 million years ago. Fossils of plants, insects and fish discovered at a nearby private site are displayed. Visitors can walk to the site and dig for and keep three fossils; a fossil hunting permit can be obtained at the center. Chisels and hammers are recommended for digging; tools are available for a fee.
Free. Fossil dig $10; $5 (ages 5-18, ages 62+ and students with ID). Tools $5 per set.
Hours: Daily 8-5, Memorial Day-day before Labor Day; Wed.-Sun. 8-5, early May-day before Memorial Day and day after Labor Day-Oct. 30. Last admission to fossil dig site is 2 hours before closing. Closed Labor Day.
