Rich Mountain Battlefield is 5 mi. w. on Rich Mountain Rd. to 4 Court St. On July 11, 1861, General George McClellan's Union troops routed the Confederates who controlled the Staunton-Parkersburg Pike across Rich Mountain. Confederate earthworks, a homestead site and inscriptions carved by soldiers are visible. A visitor center is housed in the Bushrod Crawford Store, which served as McClellan's headquarters. Exhibits in the museum highlight the city's rich history.
