West Virginia State Capitol is on Kanawha Blvd. E., facing the Kanawha River. This masterpiece of architect Cass Gilbert was completed in 1932. The outstanding feature is the rotunda's dome, 180 feet above the main floor. From its center hangs a 2-ton rock crystal chandelier, 8 feet in diameter. The second-floor ceiling is decorated with a panel design showing leaves of West Virginia's native trees. The building's office wings house the state administrative departments, including the Supreme Court and Law Library. The governor's mansion is next door. Guided tours are available.
Free. Reservations are required for the governor's mansion tour and are suggested for other areas.
Hours: Capitol open Mon.-Fri. 8-6, Sat. 9-6, Sun. noon-6. Tours are given Mon.-Sat. 9-3. The governor's mansion is open by appointment Thurs.-Fri. 9:30-11:30; guided tours are available. Closed Jan. 1, Thanksgiving and Christmas.
