University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee encompasses 90 acres bounded by N. Cramer St., E. Hartford Ave., N. Maryland Ave., N. Edgewood Ave., N. Downer Ave. and E. Kenwood Blvd. Founded in 1885 as the Milwaukee Normal School, UWM now has an enrollment of more than 29,000 students. The university's programs in architecture and urban planning are considered among the best in the country. The Institute of Visual Arts, 2155 N. Prospect Ave., offers contemporary exhibitions at several sites on campus.
